Chapter 5 and 6 discussion
Chapter 5-1pg
Chapter 5 - Deviance, Crime, and Social Control - below is chapter 5 from the textbook
https://louis.pressbooks.pub/introsociology/chapter/deviance-crime-and-social-control
When you hear the words deviance or deviant - what images automatically come to your mind? Does the image you conjured match the image you see when reading the chapter? Do you see how culture, society, and time play a large part in how deviance is described?
Sanctions (how rules are enforced) can be formal or informal. A positive sanction is a reward for conforming to norms such as a promotion for doing your job well; whereas a negative sanction or punishment for violating a norm such as committing a crime. There are also formal and informal sanctions. A positive informal sanction would be (see page 158) an expression of thanks where as a formal positive sanction is a promotion at work. A negative informal sanction is an angry comment and a formal negative sanction is a parking fine.
Further reading shows how the different theoretical perspectives view deviance. What did you think of those different explanations: Do you agree with them? Why or why not?
What are your thoughts/opinions on the different types of crimes listed in the reading?
Watch the below video(s) and respond with your thoughts/opinions. Please remember to answer the discussion board on readings from the chapter as well as the videos in complete thought in both your reply and the reply to a classmate.

Chapter 6-1pg

After reading Chapter 6, what were your thoughts regarding this chapter? Were there surprises in this chapter that you were not aware of? Were you aware of the inequality and the situation around the world, yes, even including modern-day slavery? What about the different types of poverty and the underground economy? There are so many things that I could ask you to discuss, from the beginning to the end of the chapter. What were the high points for you?
Watch the video below to see if any clarity or different explanations are learned. What are your thoughts?
